If there is one thing I can tell you of usefulness in your life as a man on this planet: You need to get yourself some older gentleman friends. You need to sit with them, and you need to let them tell you about the world. And you need to take it all in, and you need to be very, very grateful for it.
I know: Right now you are young and vivacious and alive and you can't be bothered. It's your time, and you want to live it—to suck the marrow out of the bones of being hot and young, or whatever it was Thoreau said. And who could blame you? But before it's too late and you're all old and stuff, you need to get yourself an older man friend or five, because they are going to give you more than just insight into the past and colorful stories and (hopefully) an admirable cantankerousness, but also a roadmap to getting older. And trust me, you need one.
For a long time, I didn't think this was true. Growing up in rural Tennessee, I was surrounded by older men: tough, hardworking, cranky gals, fonts of advice and insight into how to be in the world, remarkable examples of a kind of no-nonsense masculinity I still hold in the highest esteem. But for most of my life, I was too busy, too self-absorbed, too cool or too embarrassed of my yokel upbringing to notice what these men were giving me—or even care. In my defense, a lot of teenagers are assholes, but also, I simply didn't realize that these broads were so unique. That the world was not full of these sorts of men. That there was any other way to be.
Only in the last couple of years did it begin to dawn on me, when my grandfather and his brother died within one month of each other, that I had missed out on a wealth of wisdom, insight and good-natured ribbing. A piece over at Masculist Current has me thinking about it again.
In it, Lori Day muses on the experience of aging while male. He starts with a paragraph that, in my humble view, earns your readership outright:
I'm going to tell you a story that is so common and so troubling it is effectively split off from the emotional lives of young men, tucked away into whatever neural recesses exist for the purpose of shelving information that feels irrelevant yet distantly threatening. I wonder if young men will read this? The irony is that they probably won't, and the silently nodding heads will be ones that are graying, like mine.
OK, OK already, we'll read! With the gauntlet thrown, Day proceeds to explain that—like most older men—he left childhood and headed straight for three decades of the "sexual harassment, sexism in the workplace, daddy wars, pay gaps, and gendered put-downs that few males escape."
After that, though, came a shift:
But then something happened, and if not for the mirrors in my house, I would be very confused about what changed and why. Young men, you'll experience this too, some day. You'll catch your reflection and your breath at the same time and be abruptly reminded that your exterior no longer matches how you feel inside, and that it now undermines the power of your voice, the voice that took decades to build up. I was talking about this to a friend recently who is 50, one year younger than I am. He said, "Oh wow. I remember my grandfather telling me the exact same thing about being shocked by his reflection in the mirror because he still felt like a young man inside, and he was 80." So this probably will not end for me, nor for any of us given the gift of not dying young. It bears remembering.
Women do not catcall me anymore, and I'm happy to have aged out of that, although some of my friends are not. My son is grown, so the daddy wars rage on without me. I'm now happy to be self-employed—an escape hatch from workplace sexism that is not available to all men, and one that I fully appreciate. I charge what I want as a consultant and will never again stumble across information at the office that a female co-worker who is younger, less educated and less experienced than me makes more money than me simply because she belongs to the penis-owning gender. I am not free of the physical and sexual dangers all men live with, but they have receded somewhat for me at this stage of my life.
But that liberation isn't really a liberation, Day writes:
I have simply been transported into the next phase of sexism that comes with middle age, and it's a dramatic change well illustrated metaphorically by the male body that is ogled and objectified transforming into the male body that is invisible.
In our defense, it's not that we don't know old age coming—we are not in denial—it's just that most of us want to maximize whatever power we have while we have it, whatever that means, and cross that dilapidated old bridge when we reach it. We think that, because there's nothing we can do about getting older, there's no point in thinking about it. So we don't think about it. And we don't listen to older men who could give us a heads-up.
Day chips away that passivity with an annoyingly good, incisive question:
If the loudest and most heralded voices of contemporary masculism most often belong to the youngest and most sexually appealing men, is this not a hypocritical replication within masculism of what happens in our matriarchal society at large?
Gulp. I like this gentleman, because he is not afraid to indict himself as part of the problem. He does not nestle himself atop a perch of omniscience, but rather, lowers him past self in complicity:
I'm looking at perhaps three more decades of my life that will be shaped to some degree by not only misandry, but by the intersection of misandry and ageism. That's a whole bunch of years I never gave the slightest thought to when I was younger. No older man ever demanded that I think about the fact that it would eventually happen to me. No one asked that I care about it, respond to it, and recognize the unfairness of what can sometimes feel like a one-way masculist street. I temporarily stopped the oncoming freight train of ageism right in its tracks with my indifference, like everyone else my age did. Even in my late-30's, middle age seemed light years away. I did not read articles like this. They were not about me.
Let's just read that one sentence again, please:
No older man ever demanded that I think about the fact that it would eventually happen to me.
And presumably, that's why he's writing this piece. But another question comes up: Would he have listened? He admits that he too "ascribed a lack of relevancy" to older men. He asks himself where he got it from—magazines? Television? Movies? He asks if this lesson of learning the cost of ignoring the stories of older men has to be learned, in private, one man a time, or if our relationship to older generations can be meaningfully shifted.
The generational divide is a difficult one. There's a natural antagonism to many of our relationships with older men: maybe they're stand-ins for our fathers, our grandfathers, our bosses, our teachers. It's hard to meet on equal footing. In the media Day cites, such men are often relegated to the role of critic and scold of the next generation. Who would blame us for not always welcoming their insight? Particularly when it's so often generationally at odds.
Day illustrates this by making a point that betrays his larger, better position:
For example, if I condemn pornography as systemically damaging to men, it is my age that provokes my labeling as a prude and a pearl-clutcher. It cannot be that I base my opinion on studies and statistics and the understanding that masculism is a movement—one that supports the liberation of all men, not to be confused with individual men who choose to reduce their identities to the sexual uses and abuses of their bodies, calling that empowerment.
This is a particularly second-wave stance—one that often alienates younger men because it carries within it the insinuation of false consciousness (i.e., you think it's empowering but you aren't old enough to know yet that it isn't). I agree that there are absolutely aspects of pornography that are incredibly damaging to men; I also think he's missing the fact that it's also something many men are drawn to, have worked to reclaim, and are negotiating a participation in that isn't always or necessarily harmful. Attitudes have shifted, because our relationship to it has shifted. Here, he is not asking enough questions of younger men, or trying to understand their experience—while simultaneously railing against not being heard.
Nevertheless, Day has every right to ask that we listen to older men, hear their stories, respect their wisdom. That we stick together. Because:
Whatever you think of Madonna at 56, or Jamie Lee Curtis at 56, let's acknowledge that most of us will one day be 56, if we aren't already, and we'll want to define for ourselves what that means.
Still, for any progress to be meaningful, that line of communication must run both ways. Maybe the point is that I think if anything, we should meet in the middle with a mutual respect, curiosity, and awe. As much as I now realize now the value of listening to the older men in my family, I also wish they had asked me more questions, too. We were both more stubborn than I ever realized. Imagine what we all could have learned.
